Improving Timely Access to NASA Research by Removing Embargoes for Accepted Manuscripts in NASA’s PubSpace

As of October 27, 2023, embargoes will be removed for accepted manuscripts submitted to NASA’s PubSpace launch , a collection within the STI Repository (NTRS) launch . This update allows NASA research to be immediately available to the science community after being submitted, reviewed, and approved through STRIVES, NASA’s system for processing scientific and technical information. Records from the Clearinghouse for the Open Research of the United States (CHORUS) available in PubSpace may still be embargoed based on the publisher.
NASA-funded authors who wish to see their CHORUS publications in PubSpace sooner should submit their accepted manuscripts through STRIVES (for those with a NASA identity) or use the Public Access Help Desk . All NASA-funded authors must comply with Public Access requirements following the guidance located on the Submit to PubSpace page.
Why is this happening?
This improvement to the availability of research is part of NASA’s response to the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) memorandum on “ Ensuring Free, Immediate, and Equitable Access to Federally Funded Research launch .” Following the release of the memo, NASA updated “ NASA’s Public Access Plan, Increasing Access to the Results of Scientific Research launch " which advises the removal of embargoes of peer reviewed publications and supporting data should be made available at the time of publication.
Background on the 2022 OSTP Memo
In August 2022 the OSTP released a memorandum on “ Ensuring Free, Immediate, and Equitable Access to Federally Funded Research launch ” providing policy guidance to federal agencies with research and development expenditures on updating their public access policies. A major decision was for agencies to update their public access policies as soon as possible to make publications and their supporting data resulting from federally funded research publicly accessible without an embargo on their free and public release.
